Men Skin Care

Testosterone and Male Skin Care

Men's Skin Care requirements differ from female skin due to the difference in hormones, e.g. testosterone vs. estrogen. Male skin is thicker than a female’s skin primarily due to testosterone. Men also have thicker and coarser hair which protects their skin against sun damage.

Testosterone increases oil secretion in Men’s skin giving it natural moisture for the skin, unfortunately the over production of oil (sebum) can lead to large pores that is prone to acne especially in young males.

Shaving and Ingrown Hairs

Shaving regularly may cause some men to get Razor Burns or Ingrown hair which may confuse one into thinking it is acne. Ingrown hair occurs when the freshly cut curly hair re-enters the skin which causes inflammation.

To reduce the occurrence of ingrown hair, use a sharp razor and a moisturizing shaving cream which will soften the hair for a smooth shave and prevent over drying of the skin.

Avoid using Multi blade razors, the blades pull the hair out and cut the hair leaving the skin smoother for longer but also cause the hair to snap back inwards into the skin and so increasing the occurrence of ingrown hairs. Shaving regularly also dries out the skin so it is important to apply a moisturizer twice a day.

Acne in Young Men

Young men who are prone to Acne should wash their face with an acne face wash (salicylic acid 2%) as this will reduce the excess oil and calm down any inflammation, e.g. active acne.

Use an oil-free moisturizer with an SPF 15 and above to prevent sun damage and acne scars from getting darker. In the evening use a gentle cleanser or face wash and apply an oil-free moisturizer.

Keeping the skin hydrated makes the skin softer so it does not block your pores and allows natural sebum (oil) to come to the surface. Acne is caused when dead skin blocks the pores and 'p acnes' bacteria multiplies and causes inflammation.

Severe Acne

Men with severe acne should consult their doctors or dermatologist, they will be able to prescribe the right treatment to help eliminate the acne. Some of the treatments may include oral antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide creams or tetracycline. The primary cause of Acne is 'P acnes' bacteria which is killed by ultraviolet light. Some phototherapy treatments offered use blue ultra violet light without the harmful rays to help kill the bacteria. This treatment is normally available at a dermatologist clinic or a medical spa.
